Glazed - last donut of the night

Glazed was a unique spot a special place you could go to and feel accepted no matter what. This was due to the on-point hospitality of the owners James, Eva and their dog Donald who held the space so incredibly well.

James in his natural habitat.

James is a man of many talents, not only is he a pro Barista but when called for, a DJ playing the illest hip-hop, a councillor and a bomb chef - not to mention an absolute shredder on a skateboard. Eva brought that grounding female energy and an awesome Kiwi accent! Together they’re a power couple and inspiration for many.

Spaces like Glazed are hard to come by these days with new student accommodation popping up, followed by their chain counter-parts like Starbucks and Nandos, therefore it’s refreshing to have a cafe that resembles your mate's bedroom when you were a teenager. In one corner there’s a PlayStation 2 with Tony Hawks and GTA, next to a collection of VHSs, a techdeck on the table in case you get fidgety, and artwork from local creatives.

The donuts were next level as stated on the tin! The biscoff had to be a fan favourite; soft, fluffy dough with a slight chew, slavered with yummy biscoff. The chocolate Oreo was a personal fave for that added biscuit crunch. The simplicity of the raspberry and the jam-filled you can’t beat, but if you were there early enough you could also get the plain ones fresh out the fryer, which were the dogs **… (sorry Donald)!

The best ones were those occasions where you’ve skated on empty and your sugar levels were so low, that only a doughnut could bring you back to life!

The last day at the shop was a little emotional. When we got there it seemed they’d all ran out until James came through with a last donut. I felt a sense of relief that I could savour this iconic treat one last time!

As I began eating it, memories came back of special moments like the Aumies pop-up, Al’s film premier of pavilion and chopped cheese. They also held music events there from local beat makers like Cloud 9 and Mr Slipz as well as a death metal finale from COMPLETE SNAKE - which is pretty impressive for such a small space!

Whilst munching I looked into the shop seeing all the faces that came to support and was stoked for James, Eva as they had built something special and nothing short of a legacy!
